| Links Since 1977, California Drug Counseling Inc. has provided education, counseling and support to underserved individuals in Los Angeles County who have alcohol and substance abuse problems. We understand the damage substance abuse does to the individual, his or her family and the larger community. Therefore, we support the efforts of other organizations that share our mission to work to alleviate this problem and help substance abusers regain their footing in society. The following links are to federal and state agencies and organizations that provide some type of research, advocacy, service, education and/or programs in the areas of alcohol and/or drug abuse. Descriptions of the organizations are based on information provided on their Web sites. National Institutes of Health The National Institutes of Health (NIH), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the nation’s “medical research agency.” The NIH investigates all aspects of disease treatment and prevention, including the causes for common and rare diseases. Among the NIH’s 27 institutes and centers are the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). National Institute on Drug Abuse Part of the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) leads efforts to advance understanding of drug abuse and addiction, and supports over 85 percent of the world’s research on the health aspects of drug abuse and addiction. NIDA’s goal is to ensure that science, not ideology or anecdote, forms the foundation for drug abuse reduction efforts. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Part of the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) provides leadership in the effort to reduce alcohol-related problems through research, coordinates and collaborates with other national, state and local organizations, and disseminates information to health care providers, researchers, policymakers and the public. Its initiatives have focused on the role of medications in alcohol-use disorders, behavior and genetic risk factors in alcohol abuse, community-based prevention programs, alcohol abuse in underage and elderly populations, fetal alcohol syndrome and behavioral therapies. SAMHSASubstance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration SAMHSA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. SAMHSA was created to focus attention, programs and funding on improving the lives of people with mental and substance abuse disorders, or who are at risk for such disorders. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is part of the Department of Health and Human Services. Among the CDC’s primary missions are health promotion and disease prevention, especially for individuals at higher risk due to health disparities. California Department of Mental Health The California Department of Mental Health oversees the state’s mental health system, ensuring the availability and accessibility of effective, efficient and culturally competent services. Its services include system leadership for state and local county mental health departments; system oversight, evaluation and monitoring; administration of federal funds; and operation of four state hospitals. Additionally, it provides advocacy, education, innovation, outreach, understanding, oversight, monitoring and quality improvement of mental health services. California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs The California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs leads California’s strategy to reduce alcohol and other drug problems by developing, administering and supporting prevention and treatment programs. Los Angeles County Alcohol and Drug Program Administration The Los Angeles County Alcohol and Drug Program Administration (ADPA) is a division of the county’s Public Health, Department of Health Services. ADPA administers the county’s alcohol and drug programs, with the goal of reducing community and individual problems related to alcohol and drug use. Los Angeles County Department of Health Services The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services provides leadership, service and education on the health issues affecting residents of the county. Its programs span all health issues. Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health serves the people of Los Angeles County through a network of clinics, field services, hospitals and other facilities operated by the County and contract agencies. Its goal is to provide quality, cost-effective care in the least restrictive settings in the local communities. L.A.
